Finally learning how to crochet was the best decision I’ve made in recent years. It has had such a positive effect on my mental health and has given me the basis to create new relationships, friendships and experiences. Creating something for someone else is the ultimate symbol of time and care. Making something from nothing fills me with so much pride and is one of the great joys of my life.

I learned the craft on Creativebug, a database with over a thousand videos and tutorials from knitting and crocheting to sewing and cake decorating. Keeping the hobby alive has been a breeze, thanks to my Princeton Public Library card. Additionally, the print and digital collection of materials have offered endless inspiration. Here are some of my favorite books on crochet:
Complete Crochet Handbook by Eveline Hetty-Burkart: This book is helpful for beginners or anyone interested in honing their skills. It helps creators learn basic and advanced stitches, add edges, read charts and more.
Crochet Stitches by Claire Montgomerie: Another great resource for improving your stitch skills. Montgomerie is an accomplished crocheter and this book includes stitches and tips for all sorts of designs, from granny squares and mandalas to amigurumi toys and Tunisian crochet.
Mama Made Minis Knotted Loveys by Alyson Dratch: This is my go-to book for patterns and gift giving. Not only are the patterns simple for crocheters of all skill levels and easy to read, but the designs are top-notch. Every animal I’ve created from this book has been well-loved by its new owner.
Mix and Match Modern Crochet Blankets by Esme Crick: While every child in my life gets a stuffed animal, all the adults receive a blanket. This book has 100 great ideas and patterns for striped blankets for unique designs that are sure to please.
My Pretty Brown Doll by Yolonda Jordan: A gorgeous collection of patterns for African American Dolls that are completely customizable and include patterns for clothing and details.
Lastly, a book coming soon that I’m looking forward to is “Crocheted Squares” by Kate Eastwood. This book offers patterns and tutorials for gorgeous squares depicting images of nature, homes, holidays and so much more. They will be wonderful on blankets or on their own in frames for gifts.

My favorite thing about being a crocheter is that I’m able to be a part of the wonderful community of fiber artists in Princeton. Joining them at the library’s weekly Drop in and Knit program and participating in Knit for Others. Visit our Knitting Resource Guide for more resources and information or ask us. We’re here to help.
