Lecture: Women and Leadership in an Uncertain Era

Anne-Marie Slaughter and Jill S. Dolan discuss women, leadership, creating future female leaders and the ongoing struggle for true equality. Presented by the Phyllis Marchand Leadership Lecture Fund.

Anne-Marie Slaughter is the Bert G. Kerstetter ’66 University Professor Emerita of Politics and International Affairs at Princeton University and CEO of New America. Jill S. Dolan is dean of the College at Princeton University.

Considerable time, effort and money have been devoted to investigating ways to advance women in the workplace. For example by providing new graduates with mentorship programs, creating fair parental leave polices, hosting women’s leadership conferences, etc., and yet, in 2022, there are still relatively few women in high leadership positions in business, politics and academia.

At a time when women’s rights are under attack, how can we advance the role of women in all sectors of society? This question and others will be explored.

The Phyllis Marchand Leadership Lecture at the Princeton Public Library:

Mayor Phyllis Marchand provided extraordinary leadership to the Princeton community during her years as mayor. One of her favorite mayoral responsibilities included serving on the Board of Trustees of the Princeton Public Library where she along with other Board members led efforts to build a new library to serve the residents of Princeton. In thinking about a lasting legacy for the community when she retired, Phyllis once again turned to the theme of leadership, and what she could do to inspire others to assume leadership both now and in the future. What better place might there be to learn about and be inspired by contemporary leaders than the public library, a place of learning and information. The lecture fund brings leaders to the library to inspire our community, especially young people, to become more engaged in their communities.
