This recording is presented by Princeton Public Library and Not in our Town Princeton. Dr. Stephanie James-Harris, director of the Amistad Commission, will speak about the past, present and future of the commission.

The Amistad Commission ensures that the Department of Education and public schools of New Jersey implement materials and texts which integrate the history and contributions of African-Americans and the descendants of the African Diaspora. We will learn about the goals and functions of the commission and ways we can advocate for curriculum change in our own schools. We will learn about the history of the Amistad Commission in Princeton Public Schools. We will learn how to institutionalize the curriculum and how to safeguard your district from backsliding in equity initiatives

Dr. Stephanie James Harris is the Executive Director of the New Jersey Amistad Commission, a division of the Department of Education. Dr. Harris is dedicated to using historical and cultural teaching tools to reveal an accurate and inclusive view of American history. She has a bachelor of arts degree in English with a specialization in African American literature and a bachelor of science degree in African American Studies from the University of Maryland – College Park. She earned both her master’s and doctorate from Temple University in the Department of Africology and African American Studies.
