How the Museum Pass Program Works

How do I reserve a pass?

Passes can be reserved online using your library card or by calling the Information Desk at 609.924.9529 x1220

Is there a charge to reserve a pass?

There is no charge to borrow a museum pass.

Who can reserve a pass?

You will need a valid Princeton Public Library card to make a reservation.

How many passes can I reserve a day/a month?

One museum pass can be reserved per day per card. Each museum can be reserved one time per month, and up to five different museums can be reserved in a calendar month.

  • The passes to Princeton University Library may be reserved more frequently depending on availability of the pass.
  • A voucher to the American Museum of Natural History may be reserved one time per calendar year per card. However, there are a limited number of vouchers each year for the American Museum of Natural History.

How far in advance can I reserve a pass?

Reservations can often be made up to 90 days in advance.

How many people are admitted to a museum per pass?

The membership conditions of each museum vary and is indicated in the description for each pass.

How and when do I get the pass?

  • Passes may be picked up at the second floor Information Desk at the library beginning at 3 p.m. the day prior to the “Day of Use” and need to be returned by 11 a.m. the day after the “Day of Use.” For example, if the “Day of Use” is a Friday, the pass can be picked up beginning at 3 p.m. on Thursday through closing on Friday, and must be returned by 11 a.m. on Saturday.
  • The American Museum of Natural History pass is a voucher which needs to be picked up from the library but does not need to be returned. There are a limited number of vouchers which are released on a monthly basis.
  • If you have a reservation for the Museum of the American Revolution, please note that the museum pass must be presented at the ticketing counter and you will be given tickets for the first available time slot on the day you are visiting.
  • Several passes are digital/printable passes and do not need to be picked up or returned. See below.

Which museums have digital/printable passes, and how does that work?

Museums offering a digital/printable pass display  next to their names. The following institutions are available as digital/printable passes:

Academy of Natural Sciences

Frick Collection

Garden State Discovery Museum

Intrepid Air, Sea & Space Museum

Morven Museum & Garden

Mütter Museum

Please note: Grounds for Sculpture is no longer printable.

When you make a reservation for these institutions, you can choose to Print Pass or Email Pass to yourself. You do not need to pick up or return digital/printable passes. You can display the pass on your phone when you visit, or print out a copy. We are happy to print out the pass for you if needed.

I don’t see the American Museum of Natural History in the list of available museums. Does this mean no vouchers are available?

The library has a limited number of vouchers per year to the AMNH. Vouchers are made available on a monthly basis. If you do not see AMNH listed in the available museums, it means that all vouchers for that month have been reserved. Please check back during the next month.

What is a “No show”?

If you do not pick up your pass by the “Day of Use” it will constitute a “No Show”. If the reservation is canceled the day before or the day of the “Day of Use” it will also be considered a “No Show”. Once a reservation becomes a “No Show” a new reservation will need to be made, based on availability, if you wish to visit the venue. Because demand for passes is extremely high, two “No Shows” in a 60 day period may result in a 2 month block on museum pass reservations.

Can I cancel my reservations?

Reservations can be canceled up to two days before the “Day of Use.”   You can cancel online or by calling 609.924.9529 x1220. If the reservation is canceled the day before or the day of the “Day of Use” it will be considered a “No Show.”  Because demand for passes is extremely high, two “no shows” in a 60 day period may result in a 2 month block on museum pass reservations.

Can I renew or extend my Museum Pass reservation?

Checked out passes cannot be renewed or extended.

Do I need my library card to pick up the pass?

Yes, you will need to present the library card that you used when reserving the pass to pick it up. If you are picking up a pass for someone else, you need to have their library card.

Where do I return my pass?

Return passes to the library Information Desk or museum pass drop box by 11 a.m. after the Day of Use (i.e. if the “Day of Use” is Friday, return the pass by Saturday at 11 a.m.)  On Sundays, the library opens at 1 pm. Please use the museum pass drop box to return passes due at 11 am. If the library is closed, your pass will be due by 11 a.m. the next day the library is open. Passes need to be returned on time so others may use them. Thank you for your consideration of others who are waiting to use the pass.

What is the late fee or replacement fee?

The late fee for all passes is $25 a day. If a pass is lost or damaged, the replacement fee is $50. The library cannot replace lost or damaged vouchers for the American Museum of Natural History.
