Time Travel 101

Put real history into the hands of your students. Curated from the collections of Princeton University’s Cotsen Children’s Library, our portable Time Travel 101 cases contain authentic historical artifacts and adaptable teaching guides designed to support inquiry-based learning across multiple grade levels and subjects. Instead of simply reading about history, your students can examine, compare and interpret the primary sources historians use every day.

Cases by Theme:

  • Illuminate Me: Discover how medieval books were crafted, decorated, and read by analyzing authentic 15th-century manuscript pages.
  • Show Me the Money: Trace the evolution of currency in New Jersey, from a colonial-era pound note to a modern U.S. dollar bill.
  • Selling, Selling, Sold!: Study late 19th-century advertisements and trade cards to explore everyday life, commerce and consumer culture in New Jersey.
  • Got Anything to Read?: Examine the books, periodicals, and household publications that entertained and informed children in 19th-century New Jersey.
  • World War II New Jersey: Investigate daily life on the home front through artifacts including ration coupons, advertisements, a draft letter, and a child’s gas mask.

Cases are available exclusively for classroom use by educators in Princeton-based schools. Reservations are required and must be made using a valid Princeton Public Library card. To view or print digital images of the case contents, please visit the Cotsen Children’s Library website.
