When my family first moved to the United States, one of the most surprising things we learned was that many people have to stand for hours at work. Soon enough, that became part of my reality when I took a retail job in Downtown Brooklyn where I stood from 9:30 a.m. until 7:30 p.m., with only one short break. Time moved slowly, standing was uncomfortable and it was boring. Realizing that if I weren’t going to college, that job might be all I would have, I became determined to pursue higher education.

Library cardholders who are thinking about higher education can access Peterson’s Test and Career Prep, to explore a comprehensive list of colleges and universities nationwide. The list is filtered by state, public or private, field of study, school size and more. Information about scholarships and financial aid can also be found. There are practice tests for the SAT, ACT, the GRE and others. Test prep for GMAT, MCAT and LSAT are also available. I completed a pre-diagnosis GRE writing test, and it was a fun experience. If you are unsure about your field of study or are thinking about a career change, this database offers resources for career planning. You can also search for jobs.

Peterson’s Test and Career Prep is also a good source to explore technical schools with programs in fields including cosmetology, real estate and postal work. You can also learn about a wide range of careers through the Ferguson’s Career Guidance Center, which offers both a 30-Question Assessment and a more in-depth 60-Question Assessment to help you identify career paths that match your interests.

The library offers a vast number of resources and services to support learning and growth, many more than can be listed in a blog post. In addition to exploring our website, I encourage you to visit the library where we will be happy to help you begin your pursuit.
