Getting your house in order

It might be comforting to know that hundreds of thousands of people are, at this very moment, spending time gathering documents to prepare their tax forms before this year’s deadline. For some, this annual ritual is accompanied by a strong desire to become better organized and more in tune with their personal financial situation than the previous year. If that sounds like you, you’re not alone. The library prides itself on being a vital community resource. We have tools to help set your feet on the ground and realistically achieve those goals.

Need to start at the beginning? The library has a print collection (that’s also available online), Financial Literacy Basics. Easy to understand, this 8-volume series covers topics including managing debt, auto and renters’ insurance, checking accounts, 401Ks, understanding the cost of college, student loans, how to make and stick to a budget, and understanding health insurance plans.

Another year has passed and you still haven’t made a will? Guess what? You have templates that are immediately accessible and are state (and situation) specific right at your fingertips. Gale Legal Forms provides an extensive collection of forms, covering a wide variety of subjects, including power of attorney, name change, bankruptcy, real estate and more. Check it out from home with your library card.

Thinking about buying your first home? Need help with your rights as a renter? You have a discrepancy with the IRS and you don’t know how to make your case? You got a ticket while driving and you want to fight it? While you can find a treasure trove of forms through Gale, you can find an entire library of books by NOLO, a publisher of books that caters to those of us without a law degree. Their books cover a huge scope including the aforementioned scenarios and more. Find them online through Legal Information Reference Center.

And, how could we forget those taxes? Sorry, but we couldn’t. There’s no stopping them. If you are a senior citizen or a person with low to moderate income, the AARP tax volunteers are once again offering free tax services for the preparation and electronic on-site filing of federal and/or New Jersey state personal income tax returns. Appointments take place only on Monday mornings and must be made in advance by calling us at (609) 924-9529, x1220.

You know you’ve got this.
