An Evening of Deception with a Literary Twist
Saturday, Oct. 24, 6 p.m.
University Cottage Club, 51 Prospect Ave., Princeton
Join us for an evening of deception and revelation over dinner and conversation at Princeton’s historic Cottage Club, where F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote much of his first novel, “This Side of Paradise,” and drew inspiration for his timeless portrayal of social masquerade in “The Great Gatsby.” Our guest speaker will situate Fitzgerald’s work in a shifting world of “books and covers” that are at once false and true – and ever so difficult to judge. Prepare to test your powers of detection as we make this storied space our own for an eye-opening night under the starshine of Fitzgerald’s imagination.

Clayton Marsh, master of ceremonies, holds a doctorate in English from Columbia University and served as Deputy Dean of the College at Princeton. His scholarship and teaching focus on imposture and self-invention in American literature, including Fitzgerald’s “The Great Gatsby.” He will take us inside the novelist’s formative years at Cottage Club and reveal how this iconic space figures prominently, yet covertly, in Gatsby’s world.
The decor for this special evening will be planned by Judy King, an interior designer with over three decades of experience in interior and hospitality design. Her work spans from New York City to Palm Beach and California and has been featured in Elle Decor, House Beautiful and Rue.
