Juneteenth

Although the Emancipation Proclamation was formally issued on January 1, 1863, emancipation did not reach across the entire United States until June 19, 1865, when Union General Gordon Granger read “General Order #3″ to announce the message of the Emancipation Proclamation in Galveston, Texas. Until that date, slavery in Texas had continued unabated. The Juneteenth holiday commemorates the end of slavery in the United States and is a legal holiday in New Jersey pursuant to NJSA 36:2-80.
