Not hitting the textbooks this fall? How about joining one of the library’s book groups? From mysteries to politics, Spanish to fiction, to beer and books at The Tap Room, we’ve got you covered. Join us to discuss this month’s fiction book group selection, “Salvage the Bones,” on September 13th. 2011 National Book Award winner Jesmyn Ward’s pulsing novel reverberates with palpable tension as Hurricane Katrina moves closer and closer to insinuating itself into the lives of one Mississippi family. Like others without the resources to evacuate, they decide to hunker down to wait it out. What makes this novel even more gripping is that Ward is a Katrina survivor.
Other September book group offerings include a discussion of Jo Nesbo’s “The Snowman,” a chilling cat-and-mouse case with a serial killer who keeps changing his pattern, led by librarian Gayle Stratton on September 10. September 11 brings a scholar-led book discussion of Laila Halaby’s “Once in a Promised Land,” as part of the Fertile Crescent series, which recently received great press in The New York Times. Talking Politics resumes September 12, led by Joan Goldstein, and features John C. Edwards’ “Overreach.” On September 19, Circulo de Lectura, our Spanish book discussion group meets to discuss “Los das del arcoris” by Antonio Skrmeta. Jeffrey Eugenides, the featured speaker of this year’s Library benefit, Beyond Words, is the author of the September 25th Books on Tap selection, “Middlesex.”
