Constitution Day and Citizenship Day

On September 15, 2023 President Biden issued a proclamation declaring September 17 "Constitution Day and Citizenship Day" and the week beginning on September 17 and ending on September 23 "Constitution Week." The proclamation explains that on this day and during this week "we recommit to doing the work of upholding our Constitution, defending our democracy, and building an America that is more prosperous, more equal, and more just." Constitution Day also marks an occasion to celebrate the welcoming of new U.S. citizens, who have completed the naturalization process. The list below collects a variety of items from the National Archives, the library's collections, and the public record, which provide more information and historical context for this commemoration of the U.S. Constitution's ratification by the Constitutional Convention on September 17, 1787.
