Princeton Public Library is a cornerstone of community connection for local teens. As the teen services librarian, it’s a privilege to work with passionate and creative young leaders who propose, develop, and run programs that reflect their diverse interests and concerns.
Our annual teens-only A Cappella Night is organized by PPL’s Teen Advisory Board (TAB) in collaboration with the municipal Teen Advisory Group. The group coordinated performers, promoted the event, and managed logistics. This year, six vocal groups from local high schools were featured, with over 200 teens in attendance. The success of the event highlights how teens can come together to provide a platform for their peers to showcase their talents.
Teens have also led programs that tackle important social issues. For example, TAB members organized workshops on healthy relationships, food insecurity, and climate change. These presentations included research, activities like trivia games and challenges, and provided resources to encourage teens to take action on these topics. These programs demonstrate the power of youth leadership in addressing critical global issues and sparking meaningful conversations.
Teens have also led fun, relaxed events at the library, including Knot Your Average Movie Night. Co-hosted by two teen crafting groups, teens were invited to knit or crochet while watching “10 Things I Hate About You.” Events like this show that local teens view the library as a creative and social space to connect with others.
Looking ahead, we’re excited to continue supporting leadership with several teen-led programs scheduled. TAB’s annual event, I Read This Book, is on April 1 during which teens will recommend books to community leaders in a public speaking event. On April 25, TAB and the municipal Teen Advisory Group will host Open Mic Night, allowing local teens to showcase their talents in a supportive environment.
Teens Take a Stand is back for its second year, and it focuses on empowering young adults to advocate for causes they care about. Teen organizations from the library, the municipality, and HiTOPS will collaborate to plan, execute, and present to community leaders and members of the public about important topics they “stand for” or “stand against,” inspiring others to take action.
These programs are designed to empower teens, help them gain leadership skills, and build confidence. At the library, we are dedicated to creating an environment where they can lead, collaborate, and make their voices heard. It’s inspiring to see this community grow, and we look forward to the impact they’ll continue to make.
Whether you’re a teen looking to get involved, or a community member interested in supporting teen leadership, there’s always a place for you at our library. Together, we are creating a space where teens can lead, learn, and shape their world.
