Now that we are moving into the second half of summer, it’s the perfect time to encourage you to pick up a challenge card and join this year’s adult summer reading club. We are fairly certain that the majority of readers have already completed challenges that fulfill our “Escape the Ordinary” theme. Why not win a prize for your efforts? Participants have until Aug. 30 to submit entries in exchange for raffle tickets for the opportunity to win great local prizes.
Stop by the library or check out our summer reading site for a host of reading suggestions. It’s time to get rewarded for having fun! Our challenges run the gamut, from reading a book with a red cover to reading a book that scares you, or reading a book written for teens. Do you normally read fiction? Try a non-fiction book. We have lists of suggestions right at your fingertips. Has someone recommended a book to you? You’d be surprised where you come across recommendations.
Recently, I picked up “Every Day” by David Levithan, who usually writes for Young Adults, and I was procrastinating about reading it when I noticed a little slip of paper lodged in the book jacket. I finished it in a few days, thanks to the little prod from the anonymous friend who, along with someone named Jessica, highly endorsed it. The bonus was that it fit several of the reading challenges!
In addition to books, raffle tickets may be earned by tagging us on social media (Instagram, Twitter) with #PPLReads15, writing book reviews in the library’s catalog, or attending one of our Escape the Ordinary programs. Prepare a recipe from “Cook Fight: 2 Cooks, 12 Challenges, 125 Recipes: An Epic Battle for Kitchen Dominance” and share it with our book group on Aug. 13 at 10:30 a.m.; join us for some silent reading with neighbors at local parks on July 22 at 6 p.m. or Aug. 16 at 4 p.m.; stop by one of our chef-led cooking demos on July 16 and Aug. 6… the list goes on.
