We invite you to check out this month’s PPL Youth Services recommendations for activities, resources, and new books in the library collection for children up to five years old and their families.
Outdoor Storytime
Outdoor Storytime is back. Beginning April 5, join Youth Services staff every Tuesday morning at 10:30 a.m. on the courtyard lawn of Princeton Shopping Center (weather permitting) for an interactive storytime featuring books, songs, rhymes and movement for kids ages 18 months and older with their accompanying caregivers. Be sure to bring a blanket or large beach towel to sit on. No registration is required, but participants are encouraged to check the library’s website before arriving in case we have to cancel due to inclement weather.
Musical Tots
Children ages 3-5 years old are invited to experience music through books, movement, rhythm and improvisation. Beginning April 20, explore and experience the piano each Wednesday morning at 10:30 a.m. with storytime selections and introductory piano skills in this six-week series. Advance registration is required and limited to 20 children accompanied by a parent or adult caregiver. Registration will open one week before the scheduled program date. This series is led by pianist and educator Kristin Cahill, a faculty member at The New School for Music Study.
Poetry Books for Toddlers and Preschoolers
Celebrate National Poetry Month with your little one this April by sharing books from our Youth Services staff-curated list featuring poetry for the very young. Whether it’s silly nonsense poems, soothing lullabies, familiar nursery rhymes or exquisite haikus, it’s never too early to nurture the beginnings of a lifelong love of poetry.
Bathe the Cat by Alice B. McGinty and David Roberts
This picture book is a new storytime favorite. The family cat turns a day of housework into riotous read-aloud fun in this irrepressible rhyming tale of mixed-up chores and family silliness.
Storytime magazine
The library now has a subscription to Storytime, one of the United Kingdom’s leading kids’ magazines. It’s packed with fairy tales, new and classic stories, awesome animals, inspirational children, myths, legends, gorgeous illustrations, puzzles, games and much more. Bonus materials include free printables, including masks and puppets, games and game counters, coloring, and animal factsheets, available for download on their website to complement the content in the magazine.
