May 2021 | Isabel Lewis

This recording is presented in Partnership by Princeton Public Library and Not In Our Town Princeton. Isabel Lewis, a junior at Princeton University, shares her presentation for the English course “Mourning America: Emerson and Douglass.”

Last fall, students in the class “Mourning America: Emerson and Douglass” created a virtual exhibition on the history of abolition and modern abolitionist movements. The students looked to understand the governing cultural and political rhetorics surrounding issues such as race, slavery, manifest destiny, westward expansion and identity. The final exhibition (available at http://www.abolitionthenandnow.com) is centered on the theme of abolition, with topics ranging from the importance of photography in anti-racist work to the role of dominant media and the call to defund the police.

This event was recorded on May 3, 2021.
