In “Career and Family: Women’s Century-Long Journey toward Equity,” Goldin traces women’s journey to close the gender wage gap and sheds new light on the continued struggle to achieve equity between couples at home. She is joined at this event by Anne C. Case to discuss the findings of her groundbreaking research.
A century ago, it was a given that a woman with a college degree had to choose between having a career and a family. Today, there are more female college graduates than ever before, and more women want to have a career and family, yet challenges persist at work and at home. This book traces how generations of women have responded to the problem of balancing career and family as the 20th century experienced a sea change in gender equality, revealing why true equity for dual career couples remains frustratingly out of reach.
Claudia Goldin is the Henry Lee Professor of Economics at Harvard University. An economic historian and a labor economist, Goldin’s research covers a wide range of topics, including the female labor force, the gender gap in earnings, income inequality, technological change, education, and immigration. Most of her research interprets the present through the lens of the past and explores the origins of current issues of concern.
Anne Case is the Alexander Stewart 1886 Professor of Economics and Public Affairs, Emeritus at Princeton University, where she continues to teach in the School of Public and International Affairs. Dr. Case has written extensively on health over the life course.
