Reading the world

Image of a wall map covered in pins indicating travel

The Christmas when I was 12, my uncle gave my mother the audiobook tapes of “Angela’s Ashes” by Frank McCourt as a gift in our family exchange. She may have listened to the first tape once, but otherwise I don’t think she ever heard them, because I stole them away almost immediately. I began listening […]

Escape

Princeton is a wonderful place to live but even Princetonians need to get out once in awhile. The library can help our customers escape to far-off or not so far-off locales with our Travel Collection. This carefully curated collection features guidebooks, large coffee table books, and travel-writing covering every continent on Earth. I was curious to see which destinations are the most popular with our readers so I looked at the check-out statistics for our Travel books. Here are the top 10 most circulated books in the collection.

HopStop: my go-to app for getting around NYC

New York City is so near and yet can seem so far for those of us who are less than familiar with travelling to and throughout the Big Apple. Travel companions

There's nothing I like more than to have someone read me a good story. My packing routine to go on a trip includes downloading a couple of good audiobooks so I have listening choices en route. I just got back from a quick getaway to Florida. On both legs of my flight I sat next to retired seniors who wondered what I was doing with my cell phone while the plane was in the air. I was listening to reader Jeff Woodman unfurl "The Life of Pi," Yan Martel's story of an Indian boy lost at sea.

If you haven’t ridden a camel…

There's nothing like the firsthand experience of visiting another culture.  Meeting local residents, tasting exotic flavors, visiting historic sites, viewing different architecture, all play an important role in the travel experience. Capturing the journey with photographs is a way of preserving the memories, and also sharing them.

Armchair travel

I admit it, I love to travel. If time and money were no object, I would be on the road exploring new parts of the world and seeking new adventures more than I would be home. But, alas that is a fantasy for another life. Instead, I look for other ways to satisfy my travel interests.

Have a ball on vacation

Now that spring break has met with its sweltering denouement, what are your plans for the summer? If you are anything like me, you might feel a little anxious about the subject. Where to begin? Where to go? It could be as simple as following Kurt Perschke's RedBall Project to its next destination, London, in June. Although, you might need something a little more than a giant art installation to tempt you to leave your nest.
