Screening and Discussion: “Women, War & Peace II” Part 2

March 17, 2019, 2:00 pm - 4:30 pm

The second two films of the four-part PBS series “Woman War and Peace II” will be shown. These episodes are being shown in advance of their PBS premiere. After the two episodes, Eric Torsiello will lead a discussion.

Women War & Peace II” comes seven years after the five-part original series “Women War & Peace” which explored the peace-building role of women in volatile conflict zones around the world. Created by an all-female cast of directors, the never-before-told stories are about women who risked their lives for peace, changing history in the process. Each film has a running time of 50 minutes.

“A Journey of a Thousand Miles” follows a unit of 160 Bangladeshi women, on a UN peacekeeping mission to Haiti following the devastating 2011 earthquake, as they confront extreme poverty and devastated healthcare systems in their effort to build peace.

“The Trials of Spring” examines Egypt in 2011 where three Egyptian women fight for the goals of Arab Spring movement: “bread, freedom and social justice” for all. Caught between the military and the Muslim Brotherhood, the women find themselves being pushed backward.

Erica Torsiello is a nonprofit professional and peace activist with a passion for global affairs, politics, and social justice. She currently works with Womanspace, Mercer County’s leading domestic and sexual violence agency, and is on the Board of the Coalition for Peace Action. Erica volunteers with the women’s networking group BW Nice, and serves on her town’s Municipal Alliance.

Hend Nafea, featured in “The Trials of Spring” and currently at Brandeis University, will join the discussion via video call.
