Musicians and recording artists Lewis Porter on piano, Kenny Davis on bass and Adam Niewood on saxophone, present a performance and discussion of jazz music. Part of Jazz Appreciation Month, co-sponsored with the Arts Council of Princeton.
Dr. Lewis Porter teaches, performs, writes about, and discusses jazz on radio, in newspapers, and in class. A noted jazz scholar, Porter is a professor of music and founder and director of Rutgers-Newark’s Master’s in Jazz History and Research. He has authored several jazz books, including an award-winning biography of John Coltrane, as well as numerous jazz articles. Porter received a Grammy nomination for his research assistance in producing a set of Coltrane’s Atlantic Recordings. Currently he is working on a John Coltrane reference book with four other researchers. His latest CD recording is “Second Voyage.”
Bassist Kenny Davis has toured with Herbie Hancock and many others. He was a music arranger for a song on the Grammy Award-winning CD Blue Light Till Dawn by singer Cassandra Wilson. He was the bassist of The Tonight Show Band from September 1999 thru March 2002. Davis received his Master of Music from Rutgers University and is now a faculty member there. He has also taught at the University of Connecticut.
Saxophonist Adam Niewood has played and recorded with Jack DeJohnette, John Patitucci, John Scofield, Pat Martino, Dave Liebman and many others. He has taught at Montclair State U and is a well known mouthpiece technician as well.
