We invite you to check out this month’s PPL Youth Services recommendations for activities, resources and new books in the library collection for children up to 5 years old and their families. And don’t forget, Youth Services staff are once again available for in-person recommendations and encourage families to visit us on the newly reopened third floor of the library during express service hours.
Take & Make Activities
If you visit Youth Services on the third floor of the library during express hours, a “Take & Make” activity bag is available for you and your child to take home and make together. Activities for the month of November are especially geared toward younger children, with easy crafts for little hands and related early literacy activities. Each bag contains directions and all the supplies you need. It’s a fun way to get crafty together.
Celebrating 58 years of “The Snowy Day” by Ezra Jack Keats
This November, the library will kick off several activities celebrating the Caldecott Award-winning, classic picture book, “The Snowy Day” by Ezra Jack Keats, that will last throughout December and into the new year. We begin on Nov. 14 with a special Super Saturday Storytime Short featuring a read-aloud of the beloved book, snow-themed songs and rhymes, as well as ideas and resources for extension activities to do at home. Once released on the library’s YouTube channel at 10 a.m. that Saturday morning, it will remain on-demand for families to enjoy whenever they like.
Families are encouraged to visit the library’s “Snowy Day”-themed tree during the Morven Museum and Garden’s Festival of Trees running Nov. 18 – Jan. 10. This tree will capture the magic of snow, childhood and pleasure in small moments, inspired by the book.
“Your House, My House” by Marianne Dubuc
Here’s a new engaging picture book for fans of Richard Scarry’s cutaway illustrations and Susanne Rotraut Berner’s “In the Town All Year ‘Round!” This book invites readers to pour over every intricate detail of a busy day in an apartment house inhabited by woodland creatures. It’s sure to be a favorite for revisiting over and over with new things to discover each time.
“A Story For Small Bear” by Alice B. McGinty and Richard Jones
This lovely new addition to bear hibernation-themed stories is perfect for bedtime snuggles. Families with young children will especially relate to the notion of the story’s little bear struggling not to “dilly dally” while getting ready for her long winter’s slumber.
“The Blue Table” by Chris Raschka
As we enter a holiday season like no other, this new picture book by Caldecott Award-winning Chris Raschka is a comfort to read together. The book’s perspective features a family’s blue table that hosts all matters of activity as they get ready for a shared meal. Whatever your own family’s holiday meals may look like this year, this book reminds us of being thankful for just being together around the table.
