What’s for dinner?

I first discovered Ree Drummond while watching the Food Network one Saturday morning when her television series, Pioneer Woman, came on the air. From then on my husband and I were hooked. Once I realized that she had published two cookbooks, the second of which was a #1 New York Times best seller, I immediately borrowed them from the library and bought both of them soon after to add to my own cookbook collection. Her first cookbook is called “The Pioneer Woman Cooks: Food from My Frontier” and the second is “The Pioneer Woman Cooks: Recipes from an Accidental Country Girl,” both of which are equally engaging and useful.

One of the first things you notice in Ree’s cookbooks is all of the pictures. Not only is she a great cook, but she is also a photographer. Practically every step of each recipe has a picture to go along with it, which aids the beginner up to the experienced cook and leaves little room for error.

More importantly, Ree’s recipes are mouthwatering, accessible, and cowboy approved. Since purchasing her two cookbooks a few months ago, I have made at least 10 of her recipes, all of which were a hit with my family and friends. You can’t go wrong with her homemade Cinnamon Rolls, Skillet Cornbread, Perfect Pot Roast, Twice-Baked Potatoes, Patsy’s Blackberry Cobbler, or her Apple Dumplings, all of which were fabulous and have now been added to my own recipe box. There are recipes for all types of occasions but they do not require the knowledge or skills of a world famous chef, which makes these cookbooks the perfect go-to cooking guides.

What really brings these cookbooks to the next level is the way Ree allows her readers to relate to her through stories about her family and life on their ranch in Oklahoma. Her writing is also full of personality and humor, which makes all aspects of the book a joy to read.

Along with writing the above two cookbooks, Ree is also an author of two other books, “Black Heels to Tractor Wheels” and “Charlie the Ranch Dog,” both of which can be found in the library. Ree is a multi-award winning blogger for her blog, The Pioneer Woman, which contains an overabundance of recipes and entertaining blog posts about cooking, homeschooling, gardening, and more.
