June top 5 for under 5 – 2021

We invite you to check out this month’s PPL Youth Services recommendations for activities, resources and new books in the library collection for children up to five years old and their families.

Summer Reading 2021

It’s summer reading time. Starting on June 15, sign up online either from home or at the library and take the 20 day challenge. Read with your child for 20 days (in a row or not) to earn a virtual badge and an entry into our raffle. Complete extra early literacy activities to earn additional badges and raffle entries. Prizes include gift cards to local retailers. Summer reading ends August 15, so be sure to log your completed reading and activities by then to be eligible for our prize drawings.

Reading Colors Your World: Storytime At Home

This year’s summer reading theme is “Reading Colors Your World.” Enjoy sharing books, songs and rhymes, and hands-on activities with your little one from our staff-curated, color-themed Storytime At Home: Colors guide. Choose 2-3 books to read, sing a song or two, do an activity and learn together. You can also join us in the virtual story room for Storytime Shorts episodes featuring some of the picture books highlighted in the list. It’s all a great way to log reading and early literacy activities toward earning summer reading badges.

Princeton Community Pride Picnic

Celebrate Princeton’s LGBTQIA+ community with music, art activities and neighborhood nonprofits at this family-friendly event on Saturday, June 5, 5:00-7:00pm (rain date is June 11). You’re invited to gather in the Princeton Family YMCA’s expansive field to enjoy tunes from DJ Linda Leigh; make your mark on a collaborative community mural; take part in a variety of activities; and go home with fun giveaways. Families are welcome to bring a picnic to enjoy on the grass, and local food trucks and vendors will be present to add tasty treats to your dinner. This free family event will follow current COVID-19 safety protocols. Attendees are expected to practice social distancing and wear a face mask when appropriate.

Read With Pride 2021: Picture Books

Check out some of these new LGBTQIA+ selections for young kids, in celebration of Pride month. You can also read along with us as we share “Julián Is a Mermaid”, the book that came before “Julián At the Wedding”, featured on this list, as well as a reading of “The Hips On the Drag Queen Go Swish, Swish, Swish” premiering on the library’s YouTube channel on June 8.

100 Things I Know How To Do by Amy Schwartz

From the award-winning creator of “100 Hundred Things That Make Me Happy”, comes this new picture book, a rhyming celebration of child independence. It delightfully depicts 100 activities that young children can learn to perform on their own, from doing chores to roasting s’mores.
