Check out this month’s recommendations for upcoming events at the library and around town, and new picture books, curated by Youth Services department staff, for children up to 5 years and their families.
Children ages 18 months to 5 years are invited to experience music through books, movement, rhythm and improvisation in this special Wednesday story time series. Explore and experience the piano with story time selections and introductory piano skills. Series is led by pianist and faculty member Kristin Cahill of the New School for Music. Wednesdays, January 8 – February 12, 10:00 a.m., Story Room.
Stuffed Animal Story Time and Sleepover
On Saturday, Jan. 11, at 4:30 p.m., children ages 3 and older with an adult are invited to bring their favorite stuffed animal to a special story time after which they can leave their animals overnight at the library. Animals, along with photographs showing what kind of fun they had and mischief they made in the library, can be picked up when the library opens at 1 p.m on Sunday or any time the following week.
Palmer Square in downtown Princeton is offering a new winter tradition: Skating on the Square. An “eco-friendly” outdoor skating rink is located on Hulfish Street behind the Nassau Inn until Feb. 29. Hours are Thursday-Friday, 4-7 p.m. and Saturday-Sunday, noon.-3 p.m. and 4-7 p.m. All ages are welcome and the younger you are, the less distance to fall while you learn to skate!

“Penny and Her Sled” by Kevin Henkes
In this fourth installment of Kevin Henkes’ charming early reader chapter book series about Penny the mouse, Penny eagerly awaits the arrival of snow so that she can use her brand new red sled. But snow never comes and it takes some creative thinking to overcome her disappointment. A good wintertime choice for your preschooler who’d like a longer story to share.
