Open Archive: Segregation in Princeton

December 11, 2018, 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm

Stop by the Newsroom and Discovery Center to explore artifacts and archival materials that tell the story of segregation in Princeton, from businesses to schools to the local fight for civil rights.

Some historic items from the Historical Society of Princeton’s collections that will be on display include:

  • a bowl from the Balt, a popular Princeton restaurant that was segregated through the 1960s
  • Christine Moore Howell’s “Emancipator” hair straightener that she designed for African-American women while running a beauty salon on Spring Street that served primarily whites
  • the 1918 certificate of promotion to the High School of Howard Waxwood, who served as principal of the Witherspoon Street School for Colored Children and kept this position when the schools integrated under the Princeton Plan in 1947
  • a 1960s newsletter from the Princeton Association for Human Rights that mentions the March on Washington
  • 1929 Princeton Directory that demonstrates how, for $5, you could send in your copy to have all African-American people and businesses marked.

This Open Archive is presented in conjunction with the library and historical society’s Princeton Plan exhibition running through Dec. 21.

The Historical Society of Princeton’s Open Archive series allows visitors to interact with little-seen artifacts and documents from HSP’s vast collection. Featuring a different theme each time, these events present historical material with minimal interpretation and encourage visitors to make observations, ask questions, and be the historian themselves. HSP’s curator of collections and research will be on hand to share information and answer questions.

Co-sponsored by the library and the Historical Society of Princeton.
