Lecture: Juliette Wells: “Publishing Northanger Abbey: A History in Documents”

Jane Austen scholar Juliette Wells gives a presentation on Austen’s “Northanger Abbey” and its complex journey to publication. The lecture includes pertinent primary sources (in digital facsimile) including letters between Austen and her publishers. Also featured will be stories of the American collectors who owned important documents.

Wells is the Elizabeth Conolly Todd Distinguished Professor of English at Goucher College in Baltimore, Maryland, home of the distinguished Alberta H. and Henry G. Burke Jane Austen Collection. She is the author of two histories of Jane Austen’s readers: “Reading Austen in America” and “Everybody’s Jane: Austen in the Popular Imagination.”
