RESCHEDULED Historical Fiction Book Group: “News of the World”

November 15 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

THIS EVENT IS RESCHEDULED FOR DECEMBER 4 AT 6:30PM.

The Historical Fiction Book Group features scholar-led book discussions about the fictional elements and nonfictional historic and regional context of selected books.  For this meeting, Camilla Townsend, professor of history at Rutgers University, leads a discussion of “News of the World” by Paulette Jiles, a story about an orphaned 10-year-old’s dangerous journey through Texas after the Civil War to be reunited with distant family, with the help of a wizened war veteran.

Camilla Townsend is Distinguished Professor of History at Rutgers, New Brunswick. She is the author of numerous books, among them “Pocahontas and the Powhatan Dilemma” (2003); “American Indian History: A Documentary Reader” (2010) and “Annals of Native America” (2016). She has been a Guggenheim Fellow and is presently a National Endowment for the Humanities Public Scholar.
