Film: “From Mao to Mozart: Isaac Stern in China”

Monday, June 10, 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm

The 1979 film “From Mao to Mozart,” which won an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature, documents Ukrainian-American violinist Isaac Stern’s collaboration with the China Central Symphony Society (now China National Symphony Orchestra). Stern was the first Western musician to visit a country still reeling from the effects of the Cultural Revolution and the prohibition of Western music.

The film includes footage of Stern’s visit to the Central Conservatory of Music and the Shanghai Conservatory of Music and rehearsals and performances of violin concertos by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Johannes Brahms. 1 hour, 24 minutes.

Co-sponsored by the library and The Princeton Festival.
