Staged Reading: “amethyst.”

Saturday, September 28, 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

A  staged reading of EveryLibrary’s 2019 Artist in Residence Brandon Monokian’s new post-apocalyptic library play “amethyst.” will be presented at this special after-hours performance.

“The world has ended. Vodka is now made from seashells and the only music to have survived the apocalypse is Tchaikovsky and Britney Spears. The survivors must begin to build a new life. Step one: build a library?”

The EveryLibrary AIR program invites artists from diverse backgrounds to reflect on the role of libraries in modern life – especially at the intersection of politics and the arts. This year, AIR Producers Erinn Paige and Laura Damon-Moore asked Monokian to create a new play to comment on these ideas. “amethyst.” premiered earlier this month as a staged reading at the Philly Fringe Fest.

Monokian first began working with libraries by producing and directing readings of “Revolutionary Voices: A Multicultural Queer Youth Anthology” (edited by Amy Sonnie) after its 2010 censoring and banning of the book from two New Jersey libraries. He is the author of “The Most Awkward Love Life of Peabody Magoo,” “Pan is Dead,” and “Grimm Women” for the stage, and “Happy Yummy Chicken” for the screen.

“amethyst.” is directed by Becky Fleckner and is a production of Love Drunk Life. It is part of EveryLibrary’s third biannual Artist in Residence program which features Brandon Monokian as well as the illustrator, instructor and live drawer Rachel Duggan and visual artist, author, poet and facilitator VersAnnette Blackman-Bosia.

Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. and the 60-minute performance will be followed by an audience discussion with the cast and playwright.
