Waterloo : June 18, 1815 : the Battle for Modern Europe

Andrew Roberts, 2005

The epic career of Napoleon was brought to a shattering end on the evening of June 18, 1815, when his hastily formed legions faced the Anglo-Allied armies under the command of the Duke of Wellington. It was the only time these men -- the two greatest captains of their age -- fought against each other. Waterloo, once it was over, put an end to twenty-two years of French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, and led to a century of relative peace and progress in Europe.

The Battle : a New History of Waterloo

Alessandro Barbero, 2005

Italian historian Barbero offers a very readable narrative of one of the most significant battles in European history. From soggy June 17 to the bloody night of June 18-19, he describes Waterloo as if telling a story. He also provides enough information on tactics to depict how and why as well as what the commanders were trying to do, which makes the book an excellent resource for those with limited knowledge of the battle.

Defiant dynasty; the Coburgs of Belgium

Theo Aronson, 1968

The Belgian monarchy is the most recent in Europe, created only in 1831 to reign over a patched-together nation separated from the Netherlands. The history, personalities, and sometimes even the existence of the Belgian Royal Family is a mystery to many. Theo Aronson's entertaining 'Defiant Dynasty' is one of the best places to begin learning more about them. Although Belgium has only existed as an independent kingdom since 1831, the small country has produced enough interesting dynasts to keep any dedicated royal-watcher entertained.
