Quintessentially Princeton Silent Auction

NEW THIS YEAR! The Friends of Princeton Public Library invite the public to preview and bid on silent auction items on display in the library’s Community Room either Thursday, November 29, 2007 (1 to 9 p.m.) and again on Friday, November 30, 2007 (9 a.m. to 1p.m.).  Only guests attending the Friday evening Friends benefit dinner will have the opportunity to place final bids.

Margaret Kennard Johnson – Framed Art Print

From longtime Princeton-area resident and internationally renowned artist Maggie Johnson, here is a handsome framed print to add to (or help begin) your personal collection.  Johnson’s work is featured in permanent collections as far away as Japan and Europe (including the British Museum in London) to as close as the Quiet Room of the Princeton Public Library! Katherine Hackl – Princeton Library Mugs

Lambertville-based potter Katherine Hackl  is known for using natural motifs and historical themes in her pottery and tile work. Selected as one of the featured artists for the new Library’s permanent collection, her colorful tiles depicting scenes from Princeton’s past  now grace the walls of the Princeton Room. For the Friends auction this year, she has recreated a pair of her signature Princeton Public Library mugs that were sold at one time in the Library Store. These unique, hand-held pieces of art are otherwise no longer available. Donated by Katherine Hackl

Marie Sturken – “High Hopes”

Marie Sturken is a local printmaker and papermaker who has exhibited extensively in solo, group, and juried shows. Her works are included in many public and corporate collections, including the Museum of Modern Art Library,the New Jersey State Museum, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Johnson and Johnson, Columbia-Presbyterian Hospital and our own Princeton’ Public Library.  Her whimsical “High Hopes” monotype come framed and ready to hang. Susan Hockaday – “Dill and Poppy Seed Cases”

Hockaday is a Princeton-based fine art photographer whose work focuses on the patterns and structures of the natural world.  In October and November, her solo show – titled “Turning on Nature” – was held at the Simon Gallery in Morristown.  Her work is also featured in the permanent collections of the Princeton Art Museum and the Princeton Public Library. Donated by Susan Hockaday

Tasha O’Neill – “Shadow of Its Future Self”

A Princeton resident since 1973, O’Neill has long been known for her beautiful flower and butterfly photographs.  She now focuses on capturing juxtapositions found in the natural world.  Her photos have been featured in newspapers and magazines, regional shows and exhibits, and in private collections around the world.  This 16x20 photo is framed and ready to hang. Wendy Vroom – “ephemeral”

Inspired, by the work of Georgia O’Keefe, macro photographer Wendy Vroom shoots natural subjects up close to create “larger-than-life images that show details one would never ordinarily notice.”  Here is a striking sample of her work – a 24” x 30” limited edition photo giclee of hydrangea on canvas. Donated by Betsy Hoover

Fritz Lamothe – “Fishing Village”

Haitian-born artist Fritz Lamothe (b.1933) began painting as a student of Calixie Henri in 1973 and quickly became a renowned artist whose works were sold in local and U.S. galleries.  He paints using a razor blade, first laying the paint thickly or thinly, then creating the detail with the corner of the blade.  This 24” x 24” primitive Haitian landscape (oil on masonite board) is framed and ready to hang. Donated by Mr. and Mrs. Norman R. Robert Raphael – “Flowers”

Painter Robert Raphael uses gouache paint to create beautiful impressionistic-style paintings of flowers.  This one comes matted and ready for you to add a suitable frame. Donated by Robert Raphael

Bill Gregory   Black and White Photograph

Black and white archival “Quintessentially Princeton University” photograph, matted under glass and signed by the late Bill Gregory, a noted local photographer. Recognized and widely exhibited, Mr. Gregory’s photos have been shown locally at Johnson & Johnson and the Woodrow Wilson School’s Bernstein Gallery. Donated by Helen Schwartz

Peter Cook and Howard Siskowitz – Doubletake Portrait Project

Do a Doubletake!   According to one critic, it’s a “collaboration that captures subjects with insight and honesty.”  Spend an hour with this dynamic duo while they simultaneously ‘capture’ you through their unique artistic medium – a black and white photo in Peter Cook’s case and a graphite pencil drawing in Howard Siskowitz’s. After the session, you will be presented with the artists’ selection of the best pairing of photograph and drawing. Both will be matted.  Sitting to be scheduled on a mutually convenient date. Helen Schwartz – Handcrafted Basket

A former painter and printmaker, Helen Schwartz has been creating baskets for more than a decade now.  She works in traditional materials such as reed and ash but is also drawn to unconventional materials such as hand cast paper and speaker wire.  For the Friends, she has created a handsome hand woven shelf basket featuring natural beige and red colors and a loop design on the bottom.  This signed piece is too beautiful to fill — rather, it’s a work of art that is suitable for display anywhere in your home. John Shedd – Glazed Clay Bowl

Fine ceramic bowl from longtime Rocky Hill artisan John Shedd. Fans and  collectors of his work love the unique porcelain clay pieces he creates with hand made glazes.  Like all of Shedd’s  work, this bowl is ‘classic in feeling but innovative in design’ – and its soft brown and blue earth tones make it perfect for any home or office décor. Donated by John Shedd Designs

Al Aronson – “Abstract 24”

Here is a large, colorful and framed abstract painting (acrylic on canvas) by regional artist Al Aronson.  He says his artistic vision and abstract style were inspired by the breakthrough work of New York School painters of the 1950s.  His work is included in the permanent collection of the Mercer County Cultural and Heritage Commission and in a number of corporate and private collections as well. Donated by Al Aronson

Leslie Neumeyer – “Cali”

New to the Quintessentially Princeton auction line up this year is local artist Leslie Neumeyer.  Her pastel and charcoal drawing comes matted and ready for a frame of your own choosing. Donated by Leslie Neumeyer

Armando Sosa "Guadalupe"  Handwoven Pillow

Armando Sosa is a Guatemalan-born weaver who lives in Hopewell.  His brilliantly colored tapestries and textiles present themes and images of his homeland and are hand woven on looms he builds himself.   One of his large weavings is a focal point for the Library’s second floor. Donated by Armando Sosa

Buzz Spector"As If"  

Buzz Spector is a highly respected book and illustration artist from Cornell University whose work makes frequent use of the book, both as subject and object.  As an artistic acknowledgement of the 950 contributors to the new PPL building campaign, he created a unique donor book for the Library’s permanent art collection.  Here, he is offering a framed three-dimensional paper and thread piece for one lucky auction winner. Faith Ringgold"Somebody Stole My Broken Heart"  

                     

Faith Ringgold began her artistic career 35 years ago as a painter.  Today she is best known for her painted story quilts – art that combines painting, quilted fabric and storytelling.  Her work is featured in the permanent collections of many museums, including the Guggenheim, the Met and the MMA.  A mosaic mural from her award-winning book, Tar Beach is featured on the third floor of the Library.  Her large piece featured in the auction comes framed, signed and is part of a limited edition run , #75/100. Donated by Judy Brodsky and Faith Ringgold

Larry Parsons – Pair of Photographs

Having a formal education in history and a passion for visual art, it is only natural that Parsons’ work reflects the influence of photographic masters of the past.  For the Friends auction, he has selected two striking black and white photographs, both of which are simply framed.  Donated by Larry Parsons

John Nye – Art or Antique Appraisal


John Nye is owner, president and principal auctioneer at Dawson & Nye, a Morris Plains auction house founded in 1977.  Nye built his career at Sotheby’s, where he spent 15 years in a variety of positions, most recently as Senior VP and head of the American Furniture and Decorations Department.   On a mutually convenient date, Nye will spend up to two hours with you ($500 value) at your home, where he’ll inspect and provide a verbal appraisal for your fine art, antiques and family heirlooms.

Robert Hummel — Princeton Impressions Gift Pack

Beatles “Rubber Soul” -- Limited Edition Lithograph

Here’s your chance – one that’s not likely to come again soon – to own a framed limited edition lithograph of the Beatles’ Rubber Soul album cover art.  Released in 1965, this album represented a major artistic achievement for the band.  It attained widespread critical and commercial success, and in 2003, it was ultimately ranked No. 5 on Rolling Stone Magazine’s list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.  Bid high and own a piece of rock and roll history! Superman – The Movie….introducing Christopher Reeve

Here’s a vintage 1978 original promotional poster from the first of  the Superman movie series featuring Princeton native son Chris Reeve.  Almost 30 years old, this piece of the past comes straight from the Johnson/Reeve family collection and has been framed to ensure its continued protection.  A “reel” collectible! Donated by Barbara Johnson

What began as a hoax in nearby Grover’s Mill, NJ in 1938 has remained a national obsession some 80 years later.  If the War of the Worlds story continues to captivate you and your family, here’s a collectible poster from the 2005 War of the Worlds movie, autographed by Tom Cruise and framed for posterity. Yes, this former Princeton High student has published numerous best-selling story and activity books for children.  A self-described “fellow Friend of Princeton Library,” he’s s autographed four of his finest just for the Friends auction! Children’s Book Authors – Autographed Books Baskets


Here is a collection of 12 outstanding children's books, each one autographed by its author, including: Jon Scieszka, Jack Gantos, Bruce Coville, David Lubar, Andrew Clements, Adam Rx, Joshua Prince, Gloria Auerbach, and Brian Floca. A very special t-shirt from the "2007 Princeton Children's Book Festival" is also included. This now one-of-a-kind t-shirt has been autographed by each of the 34 authors and illustrators who attended the September 15 Festival held on the Hinds Plaza. Look closely - on this size L collectible shirt, you'll find autographs from the 2007 Caldecott Medal Winner David Weisner, Michael Buckley, Margery Cuyler, DyAnne DiSalvo, Amy Hest, Stephen Kroll, Trinka Hakes-Noble, and Wendy Pfeffer, just to name a few. Shepherd Lecture Series at the Princeton Adult School.  The semester’s topic?  “Religion and Politics: Age-Old Tensions Revisited.”  For this series, PAS has invited scholars to share their reflections about the worldwide conflicts of church and state both from the past and in the present.  Intended to inform, rather than propose solutions, this 8-session Tuesday evening (8-9:30 pm) series runs from February 19th through April 15 and is expected to be another sellout for PAS.  Here’s your chance to reserve two seats!
