James Carville with Rebecca Buckwalter-Poza.

xii, 209 p. ; 25 cm.
Known for his acerbic, take-no-prisoners style, Democratic political consultant and pundit Carville (Take it Back) does not pull punches in this aggressive manifesto. Surveying the political landscape, the bull-headed liberal finds the right pursuing "ridiculous positions" and "pontificating on silly-ass things that have been decided a long time ago" like global warming, WMD in Iraq, abstinence-based education, and rumors of Obama's secret Muslim heritage. Despite its provocative packaging, and some obvious recycling (yes, Bill O'Reilly and Fox News get a thorough rebuke), Carville has a serious message and some compelling analysis. Examining the demographics in the last election and the Bush administration's record, Carville concludes that the Democrats will easily defeat the opposition for years to come. A lead campaign strategist for both of Bill Clinton's presidential campaigns, Carville has plenty to say regarding Hillary Clinton's failed presidential run (though he's careful to note that she's the politician "I admire the most"). He also believes that if Pres. Obama follows the path set by Bill Clinton, enacting "solid, sensible policies," Americans will accept him as "the Real Deal." Pitched squarely in the southpaw strike zone, Carville hasn't mixed up his standard delivery, but he should find a larger audience of moderates than he has in recent years. “Haute homespun out of the Deep South.” That’s howVoguemagazine has described the fashion of Natalie Chanin.Alabama Stitch Bookbrings us a collection of projects and stories from her clothing and lifestyle company, Alabama Chanin, known for the cutting-edge twist it puts on tried-and-true sewing, quilting, and embroidery techniques, applied mostly by hand to recycled cotton jersey. This long-awaited book from Chanin begins with her story. After living in New York and Vienna for over 20 years, she began to transform cotton T-shirts into high fashion using the needlework skills she learned as a child in Florence, Alabama. When she moved home, Chanin hired local women (many of whom had worked in the state’s now defunct textile factories) to stitch her couture collections with her. What follows is a step-by-step guide to the stitching, stenciling, and beading techniques used in the 20 projects showcased in the book: T-shirts, skirts, and corsets that are sold at chic shops around the world, plus a journal cover, sampler quilt, and tablecloth, among others. Also included are a pullout stencil, perforated postcard for bead-embroidery, and reusable patterns. Throughout are Robert Rausch’s beautiful photographs set against the back roads, farms, and homesteads of the rural South.

Simon Schama.

xii, 400 p., [16] p. of plates : ill. (some col.) ; 24 cm.
Historian Simon Schama offers an essential historical perspective on the 2008 presidential election and its importance for reclaiming America's original ideal. Cultural hostilities more irreconcilable than any since the Civil War have divided America in two. In November 2008, the American people elected a new president, feeling more anxious about the future of the nation than at any time since Watergate. Our omnipotent military, the cornucopia of material comforts available, the security of our borders, and the global economy can no longer be taken for granted. Schama takes a long look at the multiple crises besetting the United States and asks how these problems look in the mirror of time. In four crucial debates--on wars, religion, race and immigration, and the relationship between natural resources and prosperity--Schama looks back to find lost insights into the future.--From publisher description.
