It's easy to connect at the library

Those of you who were in the library last year in the days following Superstorm Sandy will most likely remember that the library’s wireless network was often at capacity and unable to accommodate everyone who needed access. We invite you to try our new and improved wireless network.

A new library for a new Princeton

Princeton’s recent consolidation also meant a big change for the library.  Since 1961 we’ve operated as a Joint Free Public Library, one of six in NJ, chartered to serve the residents of Princeton Borough and Princeton Township. But we could no longer be a joint library and serve just one town so we’ve re-incorporated as a municipal library, now legally known as the Free Public Library of Princeton. We’re still planning to use the friendlier “Princeton Public Library” or “Library” in our communications with you and the world.

Several years ago our library was fortunate to receive a challenge grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities to support more humanities-centric programming and resources. The $500,000 challenge grant, matched with $1.5 million in local private support, now provides a steady source of income for the library program team’s effort to provide creative and engaging programs.

Armchair travel

I admit it, I love to travel. If time and money were no object, I would be on the road exploring new parts of the world and seeking new adventures more than I would be home. But, alas that is a fantasy for another life. Instead, I look for other ways to satisfy my travel interests.

Election night at the library

Every four years, the community gathers at Princeton Public Library to watch the presidential election returns come in, and November 6 marked our third go-round with this tradition. More than 125 people gathered in the community room, where we tuned in to CNN to watch the vote tallies and analyze the results with our election night commentator, Ingrid Reed. At the same time, PPL staffers were busy checking Twitter feeds for early calls on each state’s results while tweeting to others in the community about what was happening at the library.

I recently had the pleasure of becoming a grandmother. And, yes, everything people say about becoming a grandparent is absolutely true. You will bond with your grandchild in ways that are unimaginable. For me, bonding with my grandson means cuddling with him while reading a book aloud.

Friday nights: now with extended hours

For as long as anyone can remember, a groan would emanate from the library each Friday around 6 p.m. That's when we would announce that the library was closing for the day.

Announcements

In setting out to create a new princetonlibrary.org, we decided to go beyond redesigning our existing site. We wanted to reimagine what a library website could be and what it could mean for our customers.

Making it easier to do business with us was the primary goal, but we also wanted to provide a platform for you to discover all that we have to offer. And it all had to be wrapped in an aesthetically appealing package that makes navigation a delight.
